Growing Up Stories: 9/20/07: Story from a daughter
Growing Up COH and Adult COH Experiences

By the way, six years ago, my mother moved some items in the den into
storage.  She pays app. $200/month.  THe storage unit is filled with
junk.  I calculated that she has spent $14,000 thus far on that!...

Well, I didn't realize my mother was a hoarder as a child.
I just thought that she worked too much to clean up.  I also didn't
notice that the house was so junky until I moved out.  Before my parents
separated, my mom actually kept a meticulous house.

But after they went
their separate ways, the house got more and more cluttered to the
point that the Christmas tree stayed up all year, the kitchend became
unusable, the drawers and linen closet was so packed that they weren't
functional.  Things were purchased for the house but nothing ever came out
of the house.  Therefore, there is 28 years worth of "treasures" in the
house.

My mother's house is app. 1800 square feet but there is only 50
liveable square feet.  There is a pathway which leads you around the
house~~in the middle of the stairs and rooms.  THe house is packed with
items 5 feet high in some areas.  In the den, the stuff rises to the
ceiling.

I've cleaned up her house before, but in 3 months, it's jus
t back where it started.  It's a sad and frustrating situation.  I
don't have a solution because she doesn't want to toss anything away.  She
just wants to build a huge shed in the back to store her treasures.

I felt like i was reading my own story as i read this. I however am from england rather than america but my mother also has storage units in which must waste endless amounts of money on - and the christmas tree story almost made me laugh as we have also had this same situation many a year!
