Woman in squalid house pleads no contest to neglect
Jennifer Chambers / The Detroit News

PONTIAC -- Prosecutors hope the results of a psychological evaluation will explain why a Southfield woman allowed a home she shared with her daughter and mother to turn into complete squalor.

Today, before Oakland Circuit Judge Linda Hallmark, Stephanie Cooper pleaded no contest to charges she neglected her daughter, then 9, by allowing the girl to live in the split-level ranch home where the walls were stained with food, knee-high trash filled every room and a broken bed held a soiled mattress that, when cut open, produced maggots.

Cooper's mother, Agnes, was carried from the house by ambulance. She had open sores and dead black flesh dropping from her body. She died Nov. 6. Her death was ruled a homicide and due to sepsis, multiple pressure sores and neglect.

No criminal charges have been filed against Cooper in her mother's death. Southfield police said the case remains under investigation.

Keri Middleditch, Juvenile Justice Chief for the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office, filed a petition with the court to temporarily remove the girl from Cooper's custody. Middleditch said the ultimate goal of her office is to reunite Cooper with her daughter, now a temporary ward of the state who is living with her great uncle and aunt and attending her local school.

Middleditch said today it still is not clear to her how the home fell into such deplorable conditions. What is clear is that the girl was harmed, she said.

"I do not know why the house looked like this. That's why we requested the psychological evaluation," she said. "I can only assume there was harm to the child. I don't know how much.

"To live in the house under those deplorable conditions, watching her grandmother die and suffer in front of her. I don't know what that does to a kid. I want to assure she gets help."

Cooper, 39, is expected to appear in court May 6.

This is a sad cir*****stance. In case of an emergency most people are afraid to call for help because of the ramifications. My heart goes out to this family and I hope someday people with this problem can reach out for help without being afraid of getting into trouble or the embarrishment that goes along with it.
