Growing Up Stories: 9/24/07-Daughter...mother fills car...
Growing Up COH and Adult COH Experiences

I've been reading about other people that hoard, and that their homes are a disaster, but has anyone else witnessed a loved one's car in the same shape?...

My mom is a hoarder.
I haven't been to her home in at least 10 years - she would rather meet
us somewhere else, than have us see it.  I grew up in that house with
my sister and brother.  It was a beautiful 4 bedroom, two story house,
but I can't imagine what it looks like today.

She says none of her
kitchen appliances work anymore, and she uses a laundromat because she has
a water leak in her laundry room, and it is unusable, but she wouldn't
think of having a repair person come in to repair any of it.

She came home one day to an intruder inside her home, and wouldn't even
call the police.  Luckily the intruder left without harming her.

I do see her often, when she comes to my home. Her hoarding problem has
overflowed to her car.  It is filled with junk.  The trunk is so full
that I can see the back end of the car sag as she drives away.  The
back seat is filled up to the bottom of the back window, and the front
passenger seat is filled up as well.  Even the driver side seat and
floor-boards are cluttered with papers and bottles.  I worry that a bottle
will get trapped under the exelerator or the brake, and she'll have an
accident.  I've been reading about other people that hoard, and that
their homes are a disaster, but has anyone else witnessed a loved one's car
in the same shape?

Yes, my mom is the same way with the back end sagging because of all the stuff in it. We were never allowed to be near the car when the trunk was open, because we weren't allowed to see what was inside. Got yelled at a lot for that, to "get away."

My mom's diabetic, so she has a LOT of water bottles, empty rolling around that I too, fear will get under the pedals.

Sorry to hear your mom is the same way.

My mother just recently passed away and her car was full of junk mail all the way up to the windows in the front passenger and the back seats. It to of been several years of junk mail ads.

Make sure to find out if your mother has water in her home. If she has a broken pipe she may of had it shut off because of fear of letting anyone in. We found out that my mother did not have water, she had been buying bottled water for all house hold purposes. I will always live with the guilt because I for the same reasons had not been in my mothers house for at least ten years. I tried to get her to move to a apartment in the town that I am living in but she said she wanted to stay in her home. I knew the last time I was there that it was messy but I never thought things would ever get to this point.

YES!!!! My mom drives around in a constant state of chaos. Her full size SUV is so full of crap that she has no room for passengers. Mostly shopping bags and "returns", but also piles of papers and trash. My sister and I jokingly refer to her vehicle as the "gypsy wagon", because she could literally go around selling wares out of it!
