Growing Up Stories: Story sent in from a daughter
Growing Up COH and Adult COH Experiences

When I was about twelve my father found out. He requested and received emergency temporary custody and later relinquished it after my mother had cleaned her whole house.

It started about the time that my father left my mother and
became an increasingly bad habit as time progressed.

Our house was virtually unlivable. The kitchen was cluttered with
rotten food and dirty dishes and the floor of every room was covered with
pretty much any object that entered the house. I remember her buying a
precooked chicken and letting it rot on the counter for weeks.

When I was about twelve my father found out. He requested and received
emergency temporary custody and later relinquished it after my mother
had cleaned her whole house. A court guardian was supposed to be
appointed for me but never was, and the topic was sort of just buried in my
fathers household.

When I was fourteen, we moved to a new state and the old house
eventually had to be demolished because of all the damage done to the interior.
In about a year the new house was equal in condition to the old.

When I turned eighteen I moved out of my mothers home and began
supporting myself. I have stopped speaking to a majority of my family members
because of my anger at such a matter being left "in the closet".

I urge anyone who knows a minor in the custody of a hoarder to seek out
a court appointed guardian for them. Hoarding is a very private and
shameful topic, and most children don't know until near adulthood that it
is not a normal behavior.
