I don't know if I feel sad or happy to find this website. I read these stories and it is as if I am reading a story of my own family.
My mother is a hoarder. It went on somewhat when I was a child....there was always a room that no one could go into. My senior year of college
it became worse, after my grandmother died. Now it is the whole house. Stuff everywhere, trails, animals urinating and feces, it is
unimaginable.
I have three siblings who are still at home and have to deal with this.
My mother won't accept the truth. And even when I tell myself I
will not bring it up to her anymore, I do. And then we fight. I only want to help her.
It is causing a strain in my parents marriage. My mother shops uncontrollably.
They actually bought another house, and claimed they would use it as a rental house.
Now it has as much stuff as their other house.
I just feel so hopeless.

Re: Story from daughter, 3 siblings still at home (Score: 1) by lawmom101 on Friday, December 07, 2007 @ 17:17:13 ICT (User Info | Send a Message) | | I know how hard this is for you because my mother was and is a hoarder and I grew up like that - I could never have friends in the house, and it was disgusting and humiliating. I could not wait to grow up and move away. My husband and I forced her to clean up that house when we bought it, but now she has done it to my grandparent's house and wont let me help her - I wish that children and youth services would have gotten involved when I was a child because it would have forced her to do something about it - it seems like there is nothing like some kind of dealine or being forced up against a wall that can get these people moving - I don't know how old your siblings are that are at home - but I am 41 now - and have worked in the legal system - if any of your siblings are minors, you would be doing them a tremendous favor by reporting this to social services - there are difficult consequences from this - but in the long run it can pay off - plus even if you are away from it now - the problem will always be there for you and your siblings if it is not addressed - it may just be the problem you all have to deal with when settling their affairs later down the road - that is what will happen to me if my mom were to pas away right now - I will be left to clean up the huge mess - good luck and I sympathize and understand - Megan |
