|
Wednesday - January 30, 2008
"Get Rid of It!"
Who's the Hoarder?
Larry and Sheila are newlyweds struggling to merge their belongings
under one roof. Larry says he had to make room for Sheila's porcelain
figurines and plastic plants, while his stuff got stowed in the
garage. Sheila says Larry's stuff is crap, like his 110 hats and 54
coats.
Treasured Memories vs. Clutter
Duaan says her friend, Terri, has an out-of-control accumulation of
junk in four storage units and a garage. Terri says she feels
sentimental about everything — including a rubber chicken — and
doesn't know how to let it go.
Collection Obsession?
Kim says her husband, Paul's, Star Wars hobby has got to go. She says
he spends 30 hours a week playing with his collection, and he won't
even snuggle with her unless he has toys nearby! Paul says snuggling
bores him out of his mind.

Dirty Work: A fascinating look inside the lives of hoarders. For these people compulsive collecting is an illness that can sometimes puts them, their families and their neighbors at risk. Imagine a home piled floor to ceiling with newspapers. Or millions of toothpicks. Christmas decorations covering everything from the walls to the couch. Or pile after pile, room after room of garbage -- and the animal and insect infestations that inevitably follow. That's where Cory and Tammy come in -- a dynamic husband and wife team of professional cleaners who go inside the homes of hoarders to clean up the clutter. In this special we'll meet a woman who must confront the shocking mess left after the death of her sister and her sister's pets inside a townhouse. And we'll meet Disco Bonnie, a former party girl desperately searching for tax records buried somewhere in the hundreds of boxes that have taken over her apartment and her life. Source |

RECOGNIZING AND RESPONDING TO CLUTTER ADDICTION AND COMPULSIVE HOARDING IN OLDER ADULTS
Many older adults acquire excessive amounts of seemingly useless items, then have trouble letting go of them. When does collecting turn into pathological hoarding? What can be done when an older person lives amongst so much stuff that it interferes with activities of daily living and creates a safety hazard? Presenters will discuss phenomenology, risk assessment, use of community resources, planning and executing cleanouts, other alternatives, and the inherent ethical dilemmas.

This year’s conference will focus on harm-reduction approaches rather than treatment, per se. Harm reduction assumes that it is not necessary to stop all compulsive acquiring, or to clear homes completely in order to stop harm, and proposes that the goal of stopping all acquiring or removing all clutter is unrealistic. Harm reduction emphasizes improving the safety, health and comfort of persons who hoard, while also improving relationships between the person who hoards and his or her family members or caregivers. ...

TELECLASS for Hoarders and their Family and Friends
Do you want to evaluate your own hoarding tendencies? If you think you are a hoarder or have hoarding tendencies, evaluate yourself on http://www.bio-behavioral.com where you can find a quiz that will help you. Call in to hear more about what you can do to overcome those tendencies.
Dr. Neziroglu also has a special desire to help family members learn how to help their loved one who hoards, to get them to at least the first step of help. She wants the family to know that there is hope and where to find it.
We will have a chance to talk to Fugen Neziroglu, the author of the very practical and insightful book, OVERCOMING COMPULSIVE HOARDING, for one hour total, with 20 or 30 minutes for your questions. Just call in as you would make any long distance call. A land line is probably better than a cell phone.
