Eyewitness News 5's Maggie Carlo has the story of a local woman suffering from Compulsive Hoarding Syndrome.

Dorothy Daley is one of the millions of compulsive collectors who have an obsessive need to hoard things. "It's depressing and frustrating. I feel pushed into a corner," Dorothy says. Randy Frost, PhD and a professor at Smith College in Northampton, researches why people take saving to an extreme. "When it becomes painful to bring someone into the home, this leads to isolation, depression and shame," says Randy. There is help available for those who hoard in the form of monthly support groups and clutter coaches like Beth Johnson who asks her clients, "What would your emotional state be if you parted with this item?" Having someone there helps keep collectors on track. "Hoarding sometimes relates to memory and people feeling that if they don't keep something, they won't remember it," says Randy. Some collectors are perfectionists. Others have security and control issues. "If I uncluttered, I would be freer, happier," says Dorothy.

Some call them lazy, slovenly, unwilling to keep a clean house. But if someone is suffering from a condition called "hoarding", they're more than just unorganized or untidy. Experts believe more than a million Americans have this disorder, an anxiety that essentially prevents them from ever throwing anything away.

Synopsis
An old man recovering from diogenes syndrome, a hoarding compulsion,tells his daughter-in-law about life before she arrived, bringing order and grandchildren.

Inspiration
The grandfather in the film is grandfather to my own grandchildren. I have known him for about six years, and have heard his story both from him and from my daughter and her husband, his son. I wanted the film to show something of his unusual story and lifestyle, as well as his special relationship with his grandsons. I hope it also conveys the importance of respecting and listening to older people, and the richness of extended family.

HOARDING

There is a dividing line between those of us who collect a lot of possessions and those that hoard obsessively and find it increasingly difficult to throw anything away. Hoarding is classed as a form of OCD, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and it’s attracting renewed interest from psychologists and psychiatrists.

Many hoarders often suffer from it without realising they have a problem. Usually the condition goes unnoticed until the person faces eviction or action by a local health department. But those who are compulsive hoarders can become incapacitated and disabled by their lifestyle they become disorganised lives are isolated and socialising becomes a problem

Dr Raj Persaud visits the home of one hoarder, Sheree and speaks to Satwant Singh, a nurse consultant in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy at Newham Primary Care Trust who specialises in treating hoarding.  Listen here.  (Note from COH:  It takes about 2 mins. to get to hoarding part of program/hoarding part lasts about 15 minutes)
