I definitely did not realize my mother was a hoarder until
after I had gotten married. At first, I attributed my husband's desire
to vacuum often and pick things up to his allergies. But after a few
visits to my childhood home, when I found myself increasingly repulsed by
the filth there, I came to understand that the conditions I had grown
up in were not healthy.

I also found that I liked living in a clean home
with minimal clutter. It's hardly minimalist, but that's what my
mother, when she has visited us, calls it. She even once, in a moment of
ironic clarity, said that she finds our "minimalism" to be a real insult
to how she "keeps" her home.  Reading that article and finding this site
is very helpful as I continue to come to terms with her addictions and
their effects on me.  Thank you!
