Family Stories: Story from a spouse
Family Stories

I should have seen the signs. His family lived in a dump. Their house
was filthy and full or old rotted clothes. The toilets were never
flushed and they literally had farm animals in the house. It was
unbelievable...

Message : This has gone on for years. Within the past several years it
has gotten worse.

It is insidious, like quicksand. It creeps up slowly so at first you
don't notice. Then all of a sudden there are massive amounts of
ridiculous junk. God forbid that you suggest cleaning or removing any of it.
That elicits about the same reaction as throwing out a million dollars in
cash.

It destroys the family. The kids are totally embarassed to have anyone
here. The house reeks of cat. It is getting to my daughter the most.
She is very social and sees how others can and do live. It has already
ruined my son.

One time I tried to tell him that it was hurting the kids. One time I
tried to ask him what in the f' he was saving that stuff for? Did he
honestly think anyone would want electronic magazines from 1977???? Was he
proud that he was leaving an unholy mess for them to clean once we
were dead??

No answer. Of course not. What answer could there be??? The answer, or
lack of it, doesn't matter. All that matters is his junk and making
sure nobody disturbs his precious garbage.

Know what else I figured out? I am one more piece of junk to him. One
more thing to put on a shelf somewhere. One more magazine, nothing more.
Everything is a thing to save.

I should have seen thbe signs. His family lived in a dump. Their house
was filthy and full or old rotted clothes. The toilets were never
flushed and they literally had farm animals in the house. It was
unbelievable.

Yet not a one of them ever seemed to notice or get it.

You know, I understand how it can be identified as a disorder, I
understand how it impacts the elderly and is likely a frontal function. I
understand all of that, but is it possible we are just pathologizing too
much? Is it possible these people (with the exception of the elderly)
are just lazy slobs?

Do I sound bitter? You bet. I want my house back and I want my life
back. Most importantly, I want a life for my kids if it is not too late.
