my dad has died now and i had to clear the house with my
sisters. it took 9 skips. it was exhausting and yet liberating as we had we
been wanting to do it for years. we felt very sad at the condition he
was living in but we had not been allowed in the house for years. He
would not accept our help when he was alive.

The main collection was thousands of videos. Lots of books too. there
was only 1 chair to sit on in the whole house. everywhere was dusty and
dirty. I felt very ashamed when i lived there and couldn't wait to
leave home so that i could live normally.

I still have trouble letting people into my normal house because it was
ingrained into me not to let anyone in and i forget that i don't have
to feel ashamed anymore.

my house is minimalist and i love it. i love being allowed to throw
stuff away.

Sorry to hear about you father's death. Isn't it awful that I sometimes wish for the death of mine because the living conditions are so terrible......
I know it is tough to have to go through a loved one's belongings after death and beyond tough in a hoarder's home. I hope you feel a bit better about your home now that that chapter is done.

I am also sorry to hear of your father's death :-(

My fiance's father is a hoarder. We've tried to throw things out that we thought were trash, plain and simple, and he ended up throwing a HUGE tantrum and started knocking over his piles and making a mess in the area we cleaned, seemingly out of spite.

He's on a self-destruct course healthwise... he has high blood pressure, and diabetes, and does nothing diet wise to improve his health. Also, he was in the health industry as a Emergency Medical Tech, which confuses me even more on his inability to see that the clutter is not only unhealthy, but a health hazard. I don't know what it will take to get the house cleaned, but we hope that it's not the result of his own death or something else tragic. :-(
