SAN DIEGO, Texas, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- U.S. psychologists say clutter may be a sign of disorganization or a symptom of compulsive hoarding.

Members of the California Association Marriage and Family Therapists say there are 2 million Americans suffering from compulsive hoarding -- the fear discarding unneeded or useless items.

The family therapists say the fear that these items may be needed or have valu

Only 1 percent of the population are hoarders. This fact comes as a great relief to those who are merely "clutterers," Mike Nelson says. There is hope for clutterers.
Clutters might be able to cure themselves, Nelson says. Hoarders are going to need professional help.

It is so amusing--my SO's 5-year-old son will say, "Scar, go get the hula hoop and let's go outside." Then he proceeds to sit at the picnic table and watch me hula hoop! He just thinks its amazing that I can do that. Then he will try and of course it is way too big for him. Then he ends up saying, "Scar, can we kick the soccer ball now

Understanding Why People Hoard

As a parent I see so many strong personality traits that my daughter showed since birth! I think the brain predisposes one toward behavior traits, but trauma can exacerbate the disorder. We use our brain to figure out how to cope and react to stress, and every brain will respond differently to the same situation in levels of emotion.

My Dad once commented that each of us would respond to an accident emergency differently. The oldest would run around screaming, the second would be fascin

I really feel for you. It sounds like you are living in a house like the one I grew up in. It breaks my heart to read your words

"once I begged my friends mother as a child to take me in.
She laughed it off, never believed me."

As a child I tried to get people to believe me, to understand the squalor I was forced to live in. Like you, no one would believe me! That is one reason that I so CHERISH this group, when I say something about my mother's house

Throwing Things Away

Oh my, if I tried to clean up and throw things out my mother would be VERY ANGRY! She too uses the "reuse & recycle" excuse to save everything. I could not throw any thing out, she would go through the bags and haul out half of the stuff. In her mind, I was the cause of ALL of the junk 'n stuff, I was a convenient scape-goat. Eventually I just gave up and kept my own room clean & tidy. I moved out as soon as I could and haven't really looked back.

Despite everything that has happened you are thinking clearly enough to know that you need help, and you have taken steps to make that happen. You've called a counselor and you are letting us in on what's going on. These are big things because they mean that you are still strong inside and understand the importance of not giving up.
