More than just enthusiastic collectors, compulsive hoarders accumulate massive amounts of papers, clothing, and sometimes animals as a result of an obsessive compulsive disorder. This condition is difficult to control, and if left untreated, impairs everyday activities and creates hazardous living conditions.

From mold and mildew, to blocked hallways and exits, excessive clutter can turn a compulsive hoarder’s home into a deathtrap. Many have suffocated under collapsed piles of garbage or died in clutter-fed fires.

Today Steve Kraske talks with psychologist Randy Frost, Ph.D. about compulsive hoarding and what can be done to help those suffering from the disorder. In the second half of our program Psychologist Irene Tobis Ph.D. joins the conversation to discuss how hoarders can get past feeling overwhelmed and get organized.
