Responses to this question from the COH Yahoo Group:

I did a quick Google search "How long does it take to settle an
estate". The general answer is that it differs from state to state,
but most estates settle within a year. If there is property to sell,
and escrow to close out it can take longer.

I have heard of sticky situations where the probate ended up in family
members having to sue and evict another family member that was
essentially a squatter in the house. So if your aunt isn't willing to
force the estate into probate and have your mom evicted so the house
can be cleaned up, sold, and the proceeds split then it could take an
indefinite period of time.

If your aunt needs the money, she probably needs to find an attorney.

I agree that an attorney is probably necessary to move things along - nothing like a deadline or being backed into a corner to get a hoarder moving - at least that has been my experience

Does anyone else have any advice about this?
