POSSESSED
by Martin Hampton
http://www.vimeo.com/603058?pg=embed&sec=603058

'POSSESSED' enters the complicated worlds of four hoarders; people whose lives are dominated by their relationship to possessions. The film questions whether hoarding is a symptom of mental illness or a revolt against the material recklessness of consumerism. When does collecting become hoarding and why do possessions exert such an influence on our lives?

THE COLLECTOR

by Martin Hampton
http://www.vimeo.com/666346

The Collector is an ongoing portrait of Christian, a lifetime collector who has “worked” the streets of his local town in Provence for the last 30 years. Every night, from midnight till dawn he makes a careful circuit of the town’s dustbins and picks up things he considers useful. These are added to his ever-burgeoning collection which now fills the three plots of land he inherited from his grandparents.

The second part of the film revisits Christian after 3 years to find him adapting to new restrictions imposed by his nemesis, the town’s mayor.

Buried Treasures: Understanding and Treating Compulsive Hoarding

Gail Steketee, dean ad interim of Boston University’s School of Social Work, presents her research on compulsive hoarding behavior. Nearly 75 percent of Americans have had a problem with compulsive hoarding, or the acquisition of, and failure to discard, a large number of possessions. People who compulsively hoard, says Steketee, tend to believe that some part of their identity would be lost if they part with their possessions. Steketee discusses the co-morbidities associated with compulsive hoarding, the personality features that compulsive hoarders tend to exhibit, and the epidemiology and demographics of the disorder. She also compares the therapies used to treat it, including pharmacotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and group therapy, and concludes by emphasizing the importance of grounding change in the client’s personal goals and values.

Hoarding: Health Story
Aired on Superstation WGN
Saturday, April 2 and July 2, 2005

Dorothy Daley is one of the millions of compulsive collectors who have an obsessive need to hoard things. "It's depressing and frustrating. I feel pushed into a corner," Dorothy says. Randy Frost, PhD and a professor at Smith College in Northampton, researches why people take saving to an extreme. "When it becomes painful to bring someone into the home, this leads to isolation, depression and shame," says Randy. There is help available for those who hoard in the form of monthly support groups and clutter coaches like Beth Johnson who asks her clients, "What would your emotional state be if you parted with this item?" Having someone there helps keep collectors on track. "Hoarding sometimes relates to memory and people feeling that if they don't keep something, they won't remember it," says Randy. Some collectors are perfectionists. Others have security and control issues. "If I uncluttered, I would be freer, happier," says Dorothy.

Woman Says She Lost Job, Fiance to Disorder that Makes Her Feel Ill When She Streamlines
Feb. 11, 2006

Linda Mackintosh is drowning in treasures. Piled high to the ceiling of her Connecticut home, her collection of paper bags, boxes, yogurt containers, office supplies and so much more allows only a narrow path to get from room to jam-packed room.

Linda Mackintosh's compulsive hoarding disorder means that her house is full of clutter.
"Everybody thinks it's just a pile of old news, but to me it's a treasure!" Mackintosh said of her collection of old newspapers.

Sequestered in Squalor:
October 24, 2007
An inside view of what if feels like to be sequestered inside the squalor of compulsive hoarding.
Many of the photos you see were taken after a daily "clean-up of the house. This is often what social workers/case workers see when there is a teenager or older child or adult child living in the home with a hoarder.
Many of us are the family heroes, the responsible ones. We are often one of the gatekeepers of our family's nasty, dirty, secret.

When A House Is Not A Home:
January 07, 2008

This is a brief, but inside look at what it feels like to be a child of a compulsive hoarder. There were many days while living with my mother; I felt immersed in the wishful thinking of a young child. I only wanted to sleep, dream, wake-up, and find ALL the mess gone.

My mother is a compulsive hoarder. This is the hallway where we found her several days after she fell in the middle of her hoard (don't worry - she's okay now). Don't let this happen to your parent!

Conversation wtih a Hoarder

April 01, 2008
I recorded a conversation I had with my step-mom white going through one of the "trash bags" I had put together. I then did a video showing what we were talking about. Keep in mind. Must of this stuff is from when my sister was a baby. She is 15 now.
